Ever since I studied and worked at Leeds Metropolitan University I’ve appreciated the importance of taking a step back and reflecting. This was initially because of Professor Simon Lee, the then Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Met who wrote a daily reflection, but pretty soon I came to realise the personal benefits of reflection. It helps me evaluate my personal effectiveness, understand more clearly the world around me and most importantly learn.

From my time at the institution I also noted the significance the VC placed on anniversaries and commemorations within posts, so it seems fitting that I should reflect on my time at Edelman Dublin six months after joining. Incidentally, Professor Lee once lived in Ireland and continues to blog at his latest venture, Level Partnerships.

So here comes my reflection…

It seems like only yesterday that I joined the Dublin office in what I termed a ‘new adventure’. Its been a juxtaposition of time flying-by, but also a lot happening. Living in a new city, sampling a different culture, meeting lots of people, learning some history, getting to know a different team, taking on more responsibility, operating in a challenging market and winning new business. All these ingredients have fused to create an experience that will benefit me in the future – whatever it may hold.

The six things I’ve learnt from six months in Dublin are:

1. Have an ‘added value’ proposition
We are operating in difficult times where people have less disposable income. This has a direct impact on business’ bottom line and in turn the money they can spend. Businesses are focusing on getting ‘added value’ from suppliers, be it their PR agency or catering company. They are asking for more bang for their buck and if the rumours are to be believed, some PR agencies are dropping their hourly combined rate to below €100 per hour. Therefore understanding how you can deliver ‘added value’ for clients, whether it be thought-leadership, research or simply more hours, whilst maximising commerciality is absolutely vital.

2. Offer a range of PR services
As companies look to make efficiency savings we’re seeing a rise in the number of winner-takes-all pitches; where several agencies go head-to-head and one lucky winner emerges with lots of new business – and the losers with nothing. This is a move which is often engineered by procurement teams as they seek to increase efficiency and lower costs via economies of scale. The growth of this type of pitch means that it is essential for agencies to have both the capacity and know-how to deliver fully integrated campaigns, so a nimble, yet broad service offering is of paramount importance.

3. Become better at educating clients about social media
Media buyers dominate social in Ireland and their modus operandi is to pump money into advertising and watch the number of fans shoot up, but are found wanting when it comes to engagement. The challenge is for us is to become better at educating clients about the importance of engagement and establish a mindset of life after Likes. Succeeding in digital marketing is about having truly creative ideas, delivering compelling communications and developing communities; none of these sit naturally within the realms of media buying, digital or otherwise. Despite media buyers ruling the roost, I can see the tide is turning.

4. Explore opportunities in other markets
As there is little new money coming into the Irish PR industry, agencies are looking to secure revenue and protect jobs. The trend for consolidation is reflected widely across the economy, however, enterprising agencies are looking beyond the Emerald Isle for new business. Consultancies that are part of or affiliated to international networks are perhaps best placed to capitalise on these opportunities. Whilst, there are challenges within the Irish economy, we live in a truly globalised world where excellent technology, transport and communication means there are few barriers to winning and working effectively with clients from abroad.

5. Recognise you are working with and competing against highly qualified practitioners
Since working in Dublin I’ve noticed the high number of professionals with a formal PR education (often at Masters level) or professional qualification. This is in stark contrast to the relatively small number of practitioners in the UK who have PR degrees or CIPR qualifications. Of course my UK colleagues are no less able to do the job, but to land an entry role in Ireland, it appears you’ll need a relevant qualification. I see this as no bad thing and remain adamant that education is the best way to drive up professional standards and increase the standing in which is PR is held.

6. Unpaid internships get your foot in the door
In a sad sign of the times, unpaid internships now offer the best route into the Irish PR industry. Whilst, I disagree with this practice, I’m also sympathetic to the plight of agencies. Downward pressure means that companies have less money to recruit staff, whilst universities continue to pump out a conveyor belt of talented graduates; many of which now expect to work for free. During the boom of the Celtic Tiger graduates would have walked into full-time jobs on a livable wage, but now they must seek out internships, hoping a vacancy becomes available or increasingly they too look for opportunities in other markets.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Far from it. There’s many things keeping me here; great people, exciting clients, more strategic work, as well as my personal circumstances. The challenge is to continue delivering excellent campaigns that have a measurable impact on the bottom line. It’s a fantastic challenge, but one I’m about to sign up to for another six months and I look forward to reflecting on a year in Dublin.

I’m sure there are many new adventures to be had.

This post is the tenth Q&A in an ongoing series looking at the usual topics of PR, employability and other hints on getting into the industry, albeit with a particular focus on social media and online PR. I’m delighted that Clare Callery who is on a year long internship at Wolfstar, the award-winning PR, social media, WOM and communications agency has shared her thoughts with us.A bit more on Clare, she is currently studying BA (Hons) Public Relations at Leeds Metropolitan University and joined Wolfstar in November 2009 to work one day a week during her second year at university. Clare obviously impressed the team and in June became a full-time team member as part of her placement year. She was previously part of the acclaimed Ptarmigan Bell Pottinger Academy having won a student competition with some classmates.

Clare’s at a fantastic agency that clearly care about spending time developing their own staff. In fact, Wolfstar boast one of the most open and progressive intern policies I have seen and Stuart Bruce has consistently fought the corner of students and graduates. I’d recommend signing up to their blog to get the latest thoughts from Stuart and the rest of the Wolfstar pack.

You can find out more about one of Wolfstar’s rising stars from Clare’s blog, Tweets and Linked In profile.

1. As an Account Executive, what does your role involve on a daily basis?
Being an account executive at larger agencies or in big in-house teams can sometimes mean little responsibility and more menial tasks. However, one of the big advantages of working at a smaller agency is that you’re given the chance to work on an deliver pitches, create strategies and present it to clients and contribute greatly to team efforts. I do all these tasks and more on some of Wolfstar Consultancy’s biggest tech clients (where I feel most comfortable) and usually for consumer facing rather than B2B.

2. What’s it like to work at Wolfstar and how does it vary from the other positions you have had?
The big difference is the amount of online public relations compared to traditional. We provide an integrated approach, which means less time writing dozens of press releases and more time creating interesting content, such as social media news releases, videos and webchats. The idea is to create something that people want to read, watch and interact with, so therefore will share.

I think the days of the traditional press release are numbered as news moves online, so it’s exciting to be at the forefront of modernised media relations and learn skills that I’ll need for the future of the industry.

3. How did you manage to land the year-long internship at Wolfstar?
I started out as the ‘Friday work-experience girl’ by sending over my CV and with a ‘covering letter’ explaining why I wanted to work for Wolfstar Consultancy and what I was already doing online. By this point I was already active on Twitter and had been running a blog since the start of my course. I think being aware of and understanding social media gave me a real boost. Stuart Bruce, the managing director, even commented on my blog saying how much he liked it!

After getting my work experience, I then focused on making myself stand out in the office and being as useful as possible. After a month or so with Wolfstar Consultancy, I asked Stuart if a year’s internship would be possible. Luckily, he said Wolfstar would love to have me! I think I’m the first intern on such a long term contract so my role is more ‘account executive’ than just ‘intern’, which is something I prefer as it means I get the chance to work as the sole executive on some fantastic clients.

4. What attracted you to the social media side of communications?
I’ve been into anything a bit techy and geeky from an early age and though the personal and writing skills behind traditional public relations initially appealed to me, it is the new ‘digital’ face of communication that I find the biggest draw. Much of what we do in social media and online PR is new and as yet not unproven in comparison to more conventional means, so working on these campaigns is something I find more exciting, and more rewarding when you produce real results for a client.

5. What do you think are the main advantages of online PR vs. traditional PR?
Monitoring both campaigns and conversation around brands is more accessible and useful online. For example, rather then asking customer to fill in a questionnaire or a survey, you can get a feel for what people think of your product/service in forums, on social networks and on blogs. People are usually more open online too, so the feedback may be more beneficial. There is also the chance to engage directly with customers, which, if done correctly, can help improve reputation and allow two-way communication in a way that can rarely take place offline.

The potential reach for online campaigns is another big advantage. Not only are there a huge range of tools and channels to develop creative campaigns, but also the very nature of the Internet means that content can be easily shared; meaning the audience for your campaign can be huge.

6. Should students bring a hard copy portfolio to a PR interview? What do you think about e-portfolios?
I conduct the intern interviews for placements at Wolfstar Consultancy and I love seeing good quality, hard copy portfolios. It’s easier to reference your work when you have it in front of you to show and also takes the focus directly off you for a while, which is always a welcome feeling when being interviewed.

E-portfolios, such as those hosted online or put together in a PowerPoint, are probably best used on blogs and websites to showcase your talents. Getting out a laptop in an interview does slow things down a little, though I would be interested to see how using a tablet would help this problem. I think the obvious exception is if most of your work is online PR, in which case it would be a waste not to show of the work in a digital format. I’ve seen some fantastic ‘visual résumés’ online, which I think are great to send over with a CV or before a job interview and would really make an applicant stand out. I’m planning on putting one together soon!

7. You’re currently studying PR at Leeds Met – do you feel that your university degree prepared you for the world of work?
I’ve been pretty critical of the PR course in the past, more specifically the lack of social media on the agenda. With so many agencies and in-house teams adding social skills to their lists of attributes in a prospective interview candidate, it seems short-sighted not to learn more about this field at university. However, learning the theories behind communication and dipping into related fields, such as marketing and journalism, do give a more broad view of public relations, which can prove useful and interesting.

One of the biggest changes when going into ‘the world of work’ that university does not really prepare you for is working hours. Unless you really put the time in when studying (and still perhaps even then) you won’t be prepared for working 9-5.30, 5 days a week, plus occasionally working extra evenings and weekends. Similarly, nothing will truly prepare you for the amount of time and effort you put in to your clients, the first time nerves of real pitches, but also the feeling you get when a client says you’ve done a fantastic job.

8. What are the 3 most important skills interns need to be successful in PR?

Hard working - With so much competition in the industry, you need to make sure you’re doing that little bit extra to stand out about the rest if you want any hope of getting a job at the end of your degree.

Organisation - Something you start to learn at university, but will need to improve when working in an office. Time keeping and deadlines rule the PR world, you need to know how much time you are putting into each client if your working in an agency and also work to the timescales of media titles and journalists.

Personality – Sounds a bit strange, but there’s more to office life then just working. Gelling with your team is important, but also coming across as approachable and capable to your clients and likeable and informative to media will go a long way. Confidence and self-belief are also important when up against so many similarly qualified applicants, as well as when it comes to public speaking and pitching.

9. What 3 tips would you give to someone trying to land a social media role?

Have a real interest in the industry – As this field is so fast moving, you need to be interested in the way communication is changing and be passionate enough to read round the subject. Knowledge and understanding of the way social media works is important, so subscribe to relevant RSS feeds of both large sites like Mashable and TechCrunch, but also influential individuals who you aspire to.

Know your way around a computer – Sounds obvious, but basic tech know-how is crucial for online and any extra skills, like Photoshop, video editing or bits of HTML, will no doubt come into play and demonstrate your usefulness to an agency or in-house team. There may be less graduates applying for specialist social media roles, but the competition is still strong and the standards perhaps higher.

Use social media – Another no brainer, but just having your own blog and social profiles demonstrates that you are already active online. I don’t know any ‘social media specialists’ in PR that don’t have a blog of some kind. Not only is it a platform for you to express your interests and knowledge, but also you may have to set one up for a client at some point. Having run your own blog beforehand you will feel much more comfortable not only explaining by blogs are important, but also giving advice on how to manage one successfully.

10. If you were a student about to decide where to take your year placement, what advice would you give them?
Do it! You will undoubtedly learn more in just a few months on working in a real living, breathing PR company then you could ever learn sat in a lecture hall. Not only will your skill set and knowledge grow, but you will also develop as an individual. Working in a supportive team and delivering high quality work will give your confidence and capabilities a huge boost. I feel like I have matured more in the past six months then my entire PR course and become a better, more well-rounded person because of it and therefore more useful to any team I join in my career. Placement year makes your more employable, it’s as simple as that!

I would like to put on record my thanks to Clare for sharing her thoughts with us and wish her all the best for another great year and beyond. An ever increasing number of students I speak to say they want to work for a PR agency that specialises in social media so i’m sure they will find this Q&A insightful.

I often post wonderful examples of graduates who have used innovative methods to land a job in the PR industry, however this week the spotlight can only be shone on one person. Graeme Anthony. Although, Graeme graduated in 2006 and is searching for senior roles, the creativity, technical skill and strategic thinking behind his C.V.I.V is worthy of note and a great case study in how to differentiate yourself.

Every once in a while somebody goes and completely shakes things up and sets the bar that bit higher. Graeme’s video has done that – and it will work wonders for his Personal SEO as a quick Google search demonstrates.Whilst, Graeme was well known within the Manchester PR scene, and rightly held in high esteem by both colleagues and clients, he’s now catapulted himself into the spotlight on a global scale. Following on from the conversation this video has generated, Graeme has also demonstrated that he can expertly handle his own PR in a humble, yet professional way.

Graeme said: “The response has been mind-blowing with offers of interest ranging from small start-up businesses all the way through to large multinational organisations. I’ve received requests to go work abroad and some high-profile individuals have suggested that I start-up on my own which was extremely flattering.”

It is great to see a fellow Leeds Met alumni doing so well in the PR industry and I expect Graeme will have a positive announcement to make next week. If there is one video you watch this weekend, make sure it is Graeme’s C.V.I.V.

I gave a presentation this week entitled Landing a Job in the Digital World at Leeds Metropolitan University. The deck focused on using an e-portfolio, blog and social media to record achievement, note experiences and network with industry professionals.

I was privileged to be asked by Iwi Ugiagbe-Green to speak at an institution where I spent 5 great years as a student and then employee. The audience was made up of current students and graduate trainees who either have an e-portfolio or are giving it some serious consideration.

Iwi is running a project called Pebble-pad PDA use Placement Pilot Scheme (PUPPS) which records the experiences of people using Pepplepad software. I’ve played around with Pebblepad before and it is a good piece of kit that enables you to make an e-portfolio quickly and easily. However, it does all this behind a closed (invitation only) door and lacks a vanity URL facility. So whilst, Peppblepad is a great tool for educators to record thoughts and reflect, it could be enhanced to improve its use as an employability tool.

Anyone who knows me well, will vouch that I’m fascinated by recording achievement and, generally, I feel universities should do more to encourage students to record their work and experiences – and help them to put this online. I’m adamant that this is the way forward and if done well, will significantly boost a graduate’s employability prospects. I was delighted to hear what Iwi was up to and she presented her e-portfolios which she has used for professional development.

As I mentioned in the presentation, graduates are forever being told ‘it’s a tough world out there’ and ‘you need to stand out from the crowd’, but are given very little specific guidance. So I included a fantastic example, by Laura Tosney who produced a video application for a job at 33 Digital – so good in fact, I’ve embedded it into this post. She knows how to stand out from the crowd – and she got the job.

It was also great to have a chat with Iwi and discuss where she sees e-portfolios being utilised at Leeds Met, as well as the other issues, such as personal privacy, client confidentiality and how much information do people really want to give away online.

I would argue that the horse has already bolted for the Y Generation and we all have extensive digital footprints. Instead, we should look to enhance not minimise our digital footprint with some Personal SEO techniques.

Below is a copy of the presentation – if you attended the session I would delighted to hear your feedback or any questions you may have. You can find out more of my thoughts and presentations on e-portfolios here.
